Course Insight

Law is an incredibly varied and multi-faceted subject, affecting every part of human life, from the air we breathe, our relationships and education to our work, travel, property, and health. The Law industry is dynamic and competitive and changes in line with social needs. A Law degree offers diverse career pathways and provides you with the skillset to succeed in a number of careers. This course has been designed to offer you a holistic experience while studying law; you will study theoretical backgrounds as well as practical aspects of Law. With the successful completion of this course, you receive a practical and contemporary Qualifying Law Degree, recognised by employers and the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Should you choose a legal career, the solid grounding in law, emphasis on skills development, practical real-world insight gained through employer partnerships and pro bono work ensures you graduate ready for the next step of your legal training.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. This will account for 12 hours of contact time per week contact hours per week and you will spend at least as much time again in essential independent study including research, online work and preparation for assessment. Seminars in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures. In addition, you will meet with your academic personal tutor. A variety of strategies that aim to foster independent, critical learning will be used in different forms, varying from module to module. Almost all modules have lectures, alongside discussions, student-led seminars, individual and group tutorials, moots, negotiations and role plays. You will also be given the opportunity and encouraged to work in groups. There will also be a practical dimension to your learning.

Assessment

There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance and presentations. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

Assessment methods are designed to help you develop the skills required by employers and for professional body purposes. These include self, peer and tutor assessment, written exercises including ‘take-home’ activities which are designed to replicate practice, coursework, moots (mock trials), learning portfolios, in-class activities and examinations.

Enrolment and Duration

This is a three-year full time programme. Each academic year usually commences in the first week of October and, in some cases, the last week of September. The academic year runs for a period of 32 weeks. Students may enroll up to two weeks before the course starting date however, early enrolment is advised as places are limited.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be at least 17 years of age by 1stSeptember of the year they wish to enter onto the course and must hold a Secondary School Diploma or Foundation Diploma /Certificate or equivalent. You will also be required to be proficient in the English Language.

Graduation Requirements

The entire course comprises of a total of 18 modules over 3 years. To achieve the LLB(Hons) degree in Law, you must complete all modules to achieve the required 180 credits (ECTS*). See ‘Course Structure’).

If, for any reason, you are unable to complete the full course you may qualify for an interim award providing you have completed the required minimum credits. A Certificate may be awarded to students who have achieved over 60 credits or a Diploma for students who have achieved over 120 credits before discontinuing their studies. (See ‘Course Structure’).

We have designed this degree in consultation with external stakeholders, such as local law practitioners as well as a range of local organisations. This ensures we help you to develop the skills which are highly valued by employers, with examples including; written and verbal communication, initiative, time management, flexibility and teamwork.

Many graduates use these skills to become a barrister or solicitor, but others establish careers in education, public services, HRM, management, as paralegals, chartered secretaries or in financial services. This qualification can also be used to progress on to postgraduate study in law, such as an LLM, or in related areas such as management, marketing and accountancy.

Good to Know

This Law degree is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and is also recognized by the Cyprus Bar Association where graduates may proceed to sit the examination set by the Legal Council which is a necessary step towards qualifying as an advocate in Cyprus.
