Biomedical Science / Applied Biomedical Science BSc (Hons)
Overview
Key contributors to modern healthcare, biomedical scientists play a vital role in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease, monitoring treatments and developing advanced diagnostic tools or novel therapeutic strategies.
Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which is required for practice within the National Health Service (NHS), this broad-based Biomedical Science degree integrates a wide range of subjects to promote the understanding of how the human body works and the biology of disease. You will also have the opportunity to develop essential skills and knowledge in laboratory management.
The academic content of both the Biomedical Science and Applied Biomedical Science BSc degrees is the same. All students are initially enrolled onto the IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree. However if you complete a one year placement* in an approved laboratory between years 2 and 3 you will transfer to Applied Biomedical Science. On the Applied Biomedical Science degree you will have the opportunity to complete all the necessary requirements for registration during your course and will be eligible to apply for HCPC registration as soon as you graduate and hence will be eligible to immediately apply for Biomedical Science posts.
Our state-of-the-art Alison Gingell Building features a suite of analytical and biological laboratories where you can gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge industry techniques.
*Please note that we are unable to guarantee any placement or study abroad opportunities and that all such opportunities may be subject to additional costs (e.g. travel, visas and accommodation etc.), competitive application, availability and/or meeting any applicable visa requirements. To ensure that you fully understand the requirements in this regard, please contact the International Office for further details if you are an EU or International student.
Course information
Both the Biomedical Science and the Applied Biomedical Science courses explore the science and functioning of the human body in health and disease down to a cellular and molecular level, providing specialist knowledge about the cause of major diseases and how they can be treated.
Our extensive links with leading healthcare and research laboratories enable us to ensure course content is kept up-to-date. Particular emphasis is placed on the specialist areas of biomedical science: clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, cellular pathology, haematology, immunology and genetics.
Laboratory sessions are a substantial component of the courses, enabling you to learn the experimental techniques and develop the key experimental, data handling and reporting skills required in biological careers. Simultaneous progression through the ‘Professional Skills’ modules will develop your knowledge and skills in areas including scientific communication, self-directed study, research methods, information retrieval, IT, data processing and presentation and career development.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
