Public International Law LLM
Due to the ongoing impact of the global pandemic we have had to evaluate all of our courses to ensure that we adhere to Government guidelines to protect the health and wellbeing of our staff and students. This means that as we work through these changes the modules, delivery methods and assessments shown, including those shown for future years, are subject to change.
Please note: if you are starting your course in January 2021, all teaching will be online for your first semester. We will continue to assess the situation in regards to September 2021 onwards.
This stream of the LLM is the ideal grounding if you wish to work in organisations related to this field. With our innovative course design, this course would suit students without a law background and provide you with an in-depth and critical understanding of public international law. You will be able to tailor the course to suit your needs by choosing from a broad range of subjects including law of armed conflict, law of United Nations, international environmental law, international migration law, international criminal law, human rights and international finance law.
You will develop your ability to think both analytically and critically through our strong emphasis on independent study research. Our seminar-based teaching will focus on discussion and debate and will ensure you have the opportunity to develop your oral presentation skills. You will be assessed primarily through coursework and a final dissertation which will equip you with advanced skills in time management, written communication, planning and self-directed study.
The Public International Law LLM stream provides an outstanding foundation for you to further enhance your career in institutions related to public international law or within governmental and non-governmental organisations.
When you apply for this course, you will apply for the Master of Laws LLM. Once you have arrived in Leicester, you will be able to specialise in Public International Law through your module choices. Your degree certificate will reflect your chosen specialism.
Other available streams are:
- Master of Laws (LLM)
- International Commercial Law LLM
- International Business and Corporate Law LLM
- International Law LLM
- International Human Rights Law LLM
Careers and employability
Our Law Fair is held annually and attracts over 40 law firms and other graduate employers.
Two dedicated law careers tutors are on hand to discuss career options, upcoming opportunities and give advice about different firms.
We host a wide range of external speakers every year, representing the whole legal profession.
You get the chance to develop your legal skills during the course:
- The Legal Advice Clinic allows you to advise non-law students on legal issues (with support from academics and local solicitors).
- The ‘LEGAL WEEK’ is an informal student-staff discussion group, which runs every two weeks and contemporary issues with legal implications are discussed. ‘LEGAL WEEK’ allows interaction, fruitful exchange of ideas and improves current awareness.
- Your professional competencies can be enhanced by getting involved with the debating, client interviewing, negotiating and mooting activities, organised by the Student Law Society.
Our Career Development Service is here to support you, with advice on interviews, CVs, work experience, volunteering and more. From Freshers’ Week to Graduation and beyond, they are here to help you reach your professional goals.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
