Media and Communication | BACHELOR DEGREE

About Program

Bachelor of Media and Communication

Print. Online. Radio. TV. Podcasts. Social media. Mobile storytelling. There are many ways to create content and break the news. Employers need graduates who are more than just writers or presenters. They need producers, designers, videographers and podcasters - people who can tell stories across any medium, with the technical skills to back it up. With La Trobe's Bachelor of Media and Communication, you'll learn them all.

You'll graduate with a portfolio of work, industry experience and specialised knowledge to meet the demands of the rapidly changing media and communication landscape. With majors in journalism, sports media, media industries or public relations - you can make your degree your own.

Take advantage of The Agency, La Trobe's in-house PR firm, when you major in public relations. You will work with real clients outside the university, build contacts and experience the public relations industry firsthand.

Or cover news and feature stories as part of Upstart and Upstart Live. Our industry-grade newsroom boasts a three-camera television studio, professional radio broadcast spaces, a cutting-edge audio recording studio and 24-hour digital editing suites. You'll experience the adrenaline of live television and radio broadcasting as a presenter, producer and vision switcher - all under the mentorship of staff.

You'll learn:

  • Journalism
    • Learn how to write, produce, report on and present compelling stories for video, audio, mobile and online platforms.
  • Sports media
    • Build your specialty with subjects in sports journalism, sports commentary and sport management at a university that partners with organisations including Carlton Football Club, Melbourne City FC and the Melbourne Rebels.
  • Media industries
    • Develop skills in mobile storytelling, script writing and digital, radio and TV production, including shooting and editing on smart devices and studio cameras for social and broadcast platforms.
  • Public relations
    • Discover how audience behaviour and social media is disrupting the media landscape, while mastering communications strategies for global audiences.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 7 - Bachelor Degree.
