Islamic Banking and Finance | MSc

About Program

Master of Science - Islamic Banking and Finance

This degree is taught in collaboration with colleagues at Dundee's Al-Maktoum College. Dundee has a strong history and expertise of teaching traditional finance and economics, and they draw upon the expertise in Islamic finance and wider Islamic studies on offer at Al-Maktoum. Few degrees of this kind exist in the UK.

Students will develop their understanding of the application of Islamic commercial law in relation to Islamic financial institutions and financial products, as well as the emergence and working mechanisms of Islamic capital markets.

Topics students will cover include the operations of Islamic banks and Islamic financial markets, alongside the nature of risk and its management in Islamic financial institutions. They will explore contemporary issues and debates in Islamic finance and gain an understanding of the internationalization strategies and strategic decisions in business.

Students will also have the chance to choose optional modules which are more specifically linked to the banking sector.

Course structure

We offer you the opportunity to study our MSc Islamic Finance, or MSc Islamic Finance combined with another business topic. Our degrees are flexible, and this gives you the chance to focus on a specific area that interests you. It also shows future employers where your specific interests and skills are. There are three Islamic Finance degree options for you to choose from, we refer to these as specialist pathways. The option you choose to study is what will be printed on your graduating certificate.

Teaching

Dundee University teaching methods include:

  • lectures
  • workshops
  • group-work
  • student presentations

Typically, lectures are larger classes as they may contain students from across a range of degrees. Topics covered during lectures can then be discussed and debated further in tutorial/seminars, which are typically much smaller classes, up to 25/30 students, allowing more interaction and opportunity to learn further.

Many of our teaching sessions focus on employability, including guest lectures from industry professionals and industry-run workshops. In previous years we have partnered with EY, BlackRock and IBM, to deliver guest lectures and workshops to give our students first-hand experience of what is required in industry. We also gain the support from a large number of local and national SME’s who offer consultancy projects for our students to work on. These are designed to add to your teaching and offer you more opportunities to plan for your future career by learning directly from business professionals.

They also encourage group work, group projects, student poster presentations and other methods which help to build student confidence and prepare for the business world.

These three members of staff are our colleagues from Al Maktoum College, who support teaching on this degree.

  • Alija Avdukic is the Deputy Programme Director and course lecturer.

Coursework usually accounts for between 40-50% of the overall degree. This will depend on your final choice of modules.
