International Hospitality Business Management | BSc (Hons)

About Program

COURSE OVERVIEW

There are endless opportunities in the international hospitality industry spanning everything from catering and tourism to events, hotel management and so much more.

And much of the knowledge, skills and operational experience gained on the BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Business Management degree can pave the way for a career in business, marketing, human resource management or finance.

You’ll start preparing for your career on day one. During induction week, you’ll learn about the exciting opportunities ahead. Placements, volunteering, events – there are lots of ways to make your CV stand out if you’re prepared to make the most of them.

Our industry partners are with you every step of the way; which has never been so important given the challenges the industry has faced during the global pandemic. You’ll learn first hand how the industry is changing, adapting and overcoming obstacles, from managers and alumni in the know, and in real-time.

Our Hospitality Forum Series, in partnership with Manchester Hoteliers Association, is one example of how we are responding to the impact of COVID-19. Through a series of interactive digital events, we aim to gain an understanding of exactly what impact COVID-19 is having on hospitality, what hoteliers are dealing with at this time and how they will overcome it. Our students are following the journey with the industry and can appreciate how resilient hospitality is.

COURSE INFORMATION

Opportunities in Manchester and beyond

We’ve packed our programme with valuable experiences to add to your portfolio, such as the opportunity to take part in a competition in your second year, with the winners attending the EMCup in Maastricht to compete against hospitality students from 40 European universities.

Our industry partners regularly give talks, either in person or digitally, and look for students to work with them at events or on placement. Previous students have shadowed the event coordinator for a 600-person ball at The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and worked with the HR team at Hotel Gotham. The only limit is how much time you can spare.

Academia meets the real world

We make sure you get a good mix of classroom work and practical sessions. One day you might be learning about operations in a lecture, the next you might be on a tour of a kitchen with the head chef. There are plenty of opportunities to learn practical skills, take our food product development lab, for example. Here you’ll learn all about menus, food waste and sustainability, and the cost implications of homegrown vs bought-in products.

Since this course has an international focus, you can study a language as one of your option units throughout each year with us. You’ll also be able to choose from other options in hospitality and tourism to help you personalise the course around your own interests and career goals.

After your second year, you can choose to go straight on to final year or go on a placement. We have great links with local organisations, and we can help you find opportunities all over the world. We’ll also support you throughout your time with the business.

Your final year research project is a chance to really show off your expertise and specialise in a subject. You can choose your own topic or base it on something you discovered on your placement.
