GENOMICS AND PRECISION MEDICINE | MSc

About Program

About This Course

This course is anticipated to start September 2021. For the latest situation or any questions please contact Dr David Pryce.

The expanding amount and availability of human genetic data, together with the application of cutting-edge genomic analysis technologies, is allowing a more detailed understanding of the links between our genes, our susceptibility to disease and our potential responses to specific treatment therapies. This enhanced level of understanding is, in turn, driving the advance in Personalised Medicine, where clinical treatment decisions are becoming more informed to maximise specific patients responses to and benefit from specific therapy regimes.

Workforces with the specialised knowledge and understanding and key skill sets in application and delivery of the ‘genomic and precision medicine revolution’ are urgently required in key medical, clinical and academic institutions and in industry.

The Bangor GPM program aims to provide an opportunity to develop a fundamental understanding of the platform technologies employed in the collection and analysis of human genomic data and the application of genomic data in research and the clinic and in the importance of ethical, accurate reporting of findings to patients and the public.

The program’s modular design and delivery formats are optimised for students and healthcare professionals and is linked to the Welsh Government all-Wales strategy offering training and education in Genomic and Precision Medicine related subjects to support the development of the clinical, and clinical-associated workforce in Wales.

Further Information

If you have additional questions about academic aspects of the course, please e-mail [email protected] or phone 01248 383244.

The Bangor University School of Medical Sciences has a long track record of educational excellence in the areas of Biomedical, Clinical and Medical Sciences. In 2017.

Research Opportunities

The academics involved with this course have extensive clinical and research links with NHS University Health Boards and other external bodies and companies, which are fully utilised in ensuring that the modules are relevant to the modern clinical, research, academic or industrial environments graduates may enter.

Course Content

What will you study on this course?

This programme is based on the Genomic Medicine MSc programme framework of the Health Education England (HEE) training programme and aims to provide a multi-disciplinary and multi-professional perspective of the current and rapidly developing field of genomics, genomic applications and precision medicine, in both the clinic and in research.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Teaching occurs via lectures, practical classes and group work - including case centred discussions delivered by academic clinicians who hold joint University and Health board contracts. Academic assessment methods include written reports, oral and poster presentations and continuous assessment essays.

Modules for the current academic year

Careers

Through part time or full-time study options, the course will enhance career development opportunities for personal already working in the clinical/healthcare sector and open new routes of employment in academic and industry.

Successful graduates should be well-positioned to deliver support, implementation and development, and research roles in the rapidly expanding field of Genomic Precision Medicine; in medical and clinical institutions, academic institutions and industry.

Successful graduates will understand key genomic technologies and be able to use genomic data and information as part of research strategies, diagnostic, prognostic and treatment pathways and ethical reporting. Students will be able to engage and communicate effectively, with diverse communities, and summarise and disseminate information including test results in oral and written forms to colleagues, patients and the public.

Application

Standard entries for Home/EU and International

Application for WEDS funded study
WEDS funding applications are currently only open to UK resident staff members, currently employed by Public Health Wales or NHS Wales.

Application work flow for WEDS funding *

  • Applicants should apply for either full time or part time study for the GPM degree
  • Offers for study will be then be considered for conditionally approval based upon the level of appropriate academic background and work background and current C.V.
  • Upon receipt of confirmation of a conditional offer for study, applicants should then submit to their line managers and/or Heads of Division, evidence of their Bangor University conditional offer for study and appropriate supporting evidence, that undertaking study of GPM degree will enhance their current and/or future career practice. Service approval for eligibility to apply for WEDS funding will then considered.
  • Service approval will be sanctioned by drafting of a letter of support, outlining organisational sanction for study and agreement of the required period of study leave (full time or part time).
  • Service approval documentation should then be submitted to WEDS for confirmation of funding.
  • Finally, upon receipt of WEDS confirmation, copies of Service approval and WEDS funding approval should be uploaded to the applicant's Bangor University GPM application portal.
  • Conditional offers will then be upgraded to unconditional offers of study.

When to apply

The University will accept applications throughout the year, but we would generally advise that you send in your application form by the end of June to ensure that you have time to make any funding and/or accommodation arrangements, and for documents such as transcripts and references to be obtained if not submitted with the application. This will also give you more time to meet any conditions we may potentially attach to an offer.
