Master of Laws - Corporate and Commercial Law

Students can choose from University of Dundee's broad range of corporate and commercial law modules which deal with issues relevant to the highly complex and dynamic corporate and commercial worlds.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of core issues relating to corporate law and corporate governance, and in intellectual property law. They'll focus on the structure and development of company law both in the United Kingdom and in an international context.

Students will also learn about the radical re-shaping of company law in the United Kingdom in 2006. This has impacted on the reform of corporate law in the Commonwealth countries and other jurisdictions, which have modelled their corporate regimes on UK law.

Corporate governance teaches students about the distribution of power within key company constituencies, methods of regulating governance, governance systems across the world, auditors and internal control, and the meaning and importance of good governance with references to stakeholder theory and environmental sustainability.

Teaching

We offer an induction programme in legal research skills at the start of each semester. This ensures that you understand the UK and European legal systems, and can find and use the resources that you will need. You will also learn what is required of you in a study environment where you may be learning more independently than previously.

Most of your teaching will be in student-led seminars where you will read extensively in advance, and discussion will be facilitated by the lecturer. Sometimes there will be a lecture component, e.g. at the start of the class to structure the discussion.

All our modules are delivered by experts in their field. Guest lecturers may also visit, either within modules or as a separate event. We offer a wide variety of external activities including a residential study trip for all students.

You will devise, research, and write a dissertation in the summer, which will consider a question relevant to corporate and commercial law. This will let you demonstrate your research skills, and there will be classes to help you prepare for this.

Assessment

You will be assessed mainly through a combination of exams and essays, reports or other written coursework. Some of our modules have exams and some have essays, but whatever form of assessment is used, there will be a formative ‘practice’ assessment early in the semester to gauge your progress and identify ways to improve.

Your dissertation is assessed wholly on the basis of the final text that is submitted.

Our Legal Research Skills module, which runs in two blocks at the start of each semester, is assessed by a short essay (in your first block) and a group article and presentation (in your second block).

This LLM degree offers the knowledge and skills for graduates keen to enter the competitive world of commercial and corporate law practice.

You could work in a law firm specialising in commercial and corporate work or join the legal team of a global corporation.

If you don't want to pursue a legal career, you can work in the corporate and commercial sectors.

You will graduate with all the legal knowledge and problem-solving skills required to practice in the wider corporate and commercial business sector, including accounting.

You can also pursue a PhD in commercial and corporate law.
