We have collaborated with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) to create an exciting programme of study in Fire Scene Investigation which will see you investigate the cause and origin of fires, using multi-disciplinary science and research methodology.
For your dissertation you’ll get to study an area of fire science that interests you, taking responsibility for designing, conducting, analysing and interpreting the results of a substantial investigation that’ll also be contributing to the discipline.
You’ll gain valuable work experience with an opportunity to undertake a professional placement as part of your MSc, or choose an industry-based project.

What you’ll do
- The theory and practical sessions will build your confidence and expertise in the field of fire scene investigation and reporting protocols.
- You’ll study the principles of fuels, sources of ignition and fire behaviour in buildings, fire modelling and dynamics and development hypothesis testing.
- You’ll also learn how to give evidence as an expert witness in court and study the anatomy of large scale accidents and catastrophes.

As a graduate of the Fire Scene Investigation course you’ll be well placed to work in fire investigation teams, forensic science laboratories, and fraud departments in major government or private organisations. Or, you could go on to further research in academia.
