On our BSc (Hons) Microbiology (Foundation Entry) course you’ll learn all about health and disease, developing your knowledge of how the human body functions and gaining the skills you need to progress to a full honours degree.
Our foundation entry degree courses are ideal if you’ve got the ability to study for a degree but you don’t have the qualifications needed to directly enter the full honours degree programme. During the foundation year, we’ll equip you with the essential knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical science skills you’ll need to succeed at degree level.
We’ll support and encourage you to develop your critical thinking and gain the skills and confidence you need to thrive at University. Once you’re on this course, there’s no need to make an additional application and you won’t have to attend an interview to progress to Year 1 of our Microbiology degree (entry requirements apply).
Throughout the course, you’ll develop a range of laboratory-based and theoretical skills associated with sound scientific practice. The skills you gain are perfect for anyone who aspires to work in diagnostic and pathology laboratories in hospitals and other medical institutions or work in areas such as toxicology.

Course delivery
Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of our published course information. However, our programmes are subject to ongoing review and development. Changing circumstances may cause alteration to, or the cancellation of, courses. Changes may be necessary to comply with the requirements of accrediting bodies or revisions to subject benchmarks statements. As well as to keep courses updated and contemporary, or as a result of student feedback. We reserve the right to make variations if we consider such action to be necessary or in the best interests of students.
Future careers
Your Microbiology Foundation Entry Degree could lead to work in diagnostic and pathology laboratories, hospitals and other medical institutions, or you could work in areas such as toxicology.
You could also pursue careers in research, through postgraduate study, teaching and marketing or management within microbiology-related industries. And some graduates go on to pursue further studies in dentistry or medicine.
Approximately 60% of our full-time graduates go on to work within the NHS and over 90% of our sandwich students gain employment within the NHS.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
