If you have an interest in the human body and want to learn more about how the body functions to maintain a stable environment then our Physiology and Pharmacology programme is the ideal course for you.
This degree is the perfect route if you want a career in the pharmaceutical industry, as you’ll study the human body in both normal and altered states, including the development of disease processes. You’ll have the flexibility to choose between two final degree routes dependent on your chosen career.
This degree programme offers you the opportunity to study the two related disciplines of physiology and pharmacology. In the physiological aspects of the course, you will gain a firm understanding of the range of processes happening in the various tissues and organs of the human body, how these are altered in response to external and internal stimuli, and how these go wrong in disease states.
The pharmacology aspects will focus on how drugs act on the human body and how they can be used as medications to restore normal physiology. You’ll be provided with a comprehensive introduction to basic bioscience and develop essential laboratory and study skills.
You’ll also undertake advanced physiology and pharmacology learning where you will be introduced to altered human physiology in disease (pathophysiology) and begin to understand the actions of common drugs that are used to treat these states.

What you'll do
- This is a lab-based programme taught in modern facilities similar to those used in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Taught by internationally-recognised research-active scientists investigating various neuronal and psychiatric disorders and brain cancers, you’ll be exposed to data from key fields of research relevant to many current major medical problems.
- You’ll have the opportunity in your second year to study abroad and this includes European countries and the USA. You could also work as a paid summer intern in the labs.

Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

Future careers
It is the perfect route if you want a career in the pharmaceutical industry – drug testing, drug research, drug design and development, lab work or other bioscience based careers.
As a graduate from this degree programme you can go on to follow careers within industrial settings (eg drug design and development, quality assurance, coordinating clinical trials). You could also pursue research careers in physiology-related areas after a period of postgraduate study (PhDs, undertaken both here and in other universities).
