About Program

Are you a healthcare, emergency or urgent care professional who is considering venturing into the exciting and expanding field of Disaster Medicine? The MSc Disaster Medicine course expands the scope of your skills, enabling you to work as part of a disaster response team – delivering, planning and co-ordinating disaster and conflict healthcare.?

Delivering healthcare to communities affected by disasters, be they natural or man-made, is an aspect of healthcare that is both demanding and immensely rewarding.?This course will see you acquire the specific skills and expertise required to adapt and respond to the needs of communities when they are at their most vulnerable.

Designed by medical professionals with experience in disaster and conflict medicine, the course also provides you with the skills required to plan, manage and deliver a medical programme under challenging conditions, whilst also considering ethical, legal and logistical issues.

What you'll do

  • Learn from an experienced, inspiring and specialist team led by?Dr Ayman Jundi, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with 20+ years of experience. He shares his hard-earned, hands-on experience in disaster management, gained through his work and through the co-founding of charity, Syria Relief.
  • Explore triage, outreach teams, pre-hospital management, evacuation and communication as well as public health and infection control, family planning, peri-natal care, mental health, rehabilitation and national and international preparations.?
  • Broaden your understanding of risk management and preparedness, public health considerations, the role of technology in disaster medicine, and the impact of extreme conditions such as altitude or extreme cold and heat.

Course structure

PGCert - Requires 60 credits at Level 7

The 60 credits are comprised of MB4090 Disaster Medicine (40 credits) and MB4091 Planning for Disasters (20 credits)

PGDip - Requires 120 credits at Level 7

  • These must include MB4090 Disaster Medicine (40 credits) and MB4091 Planning for Disasters (20 credits) as per PGCert
  • MB4094 Co-ordination and Management of Disaster Response (20 credits)
  • Any combination of at least 2 optional modules (20 credits each)

MSc - Requires 180 credits at Level 7

  • These must include MB4090 Disaster Medicine (40 credits) and MB4091 Planning for Disasters (20 credits) as per PGCert,
  • MB4094 Co-ordination and Management of Disaster Response (20 credits), and any combination of at least 2 optional modules (20 credits each), as per PGDip,
  • The remaining 60 credits are comprised of either
    • MB4066 (20 credits) and MB4022 (40 credits), or
    • MB4060 (20 credits) and MB4003 (40 credits)
