Course delivery
Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

Many of our staff are practising Clinical Psychologists and work or have worked within the NHS, and we also have links with clinicians in private practice. This ensures that graduates from our course are equipped with the skills that employers need.
This unique mix of professionals is reflected in the content of the course, where you’ll learn about the differences and similarities involved in working clinically within the NHS and in private practice.
The course content, teaching and assessments have been developed by the course team working closely with clinical psychologists, practitioners, employers, current and recent trainees in the area, and those with the desire to work within the field. The result is an exciting and vibrant course that covers all the essential subject material you need to move into the exciting field of Clinical Psychology.
Future careers
Our programme strengthens your academic credentials in preparation for a career in Clinical Psychology (for example through Assistant Psychologist posts within the NHS and further competitive doctoral training in Clinical Psychology). You’ll also strengthen your CV in preparation for other professions in the areas of Clinical Psychology, mental health, academia, or research.
In the year immediately after completing our course, past students have gone on to secure positions as Assistant Clinical Psychologists in a range of services (eg specialist learning disabilities teams within the NHS, forensic services, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and Psychology Healthcare Assistants in the NHS, Mental Wellbeing Practitioners in the private sector).

Learning and assessment
The course is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories to facilitate teaching and research. The Child Observation Suite and Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory are focused on the study of children (the latter through the measurement of brain activity, which is also the focus of our Brain Imaging Laboratory, which carries out studies on adults). The Cognitive Psychology Complex houses our motion capture, virtual reality and forensics labs (including the EvoFIT composite system) as well as our Clinical, Health and Psychobiology Suite (CHaPS).
The core theoretical basis of Clinical Psychology will be taught through lectures and supported seminars. Seminars and workshops are used to explore key issues from the curriculum, both to facilitate understanding and develop skills. You are encouraged to prepare material in advance of the sessions and exchange information as part of a peer network. You will also carry out independent study and research supervision (to support the production of a high-quality research project that will contribute to the field of Clinical Psychology).
The course is primarily assessed through coursework. Where possible, your coursework will be based around the activities you would undertake when working within the field. The largest piece of coursework is the research project. You will also be assessed through essays, presentations, and role play (as a way of developing the skills you need for practice).
The taught component of the course will take place on a Tuesday to support students with jobs and/or family commitments, and it may be completed over one year (full-time) or two or more years (part-time).
