Course Overview

During this course you’ll develop a critical awareness of contemporary issues in construction project management, informed by leading edge construction technology, research and practice. You’ll gain an understanding of how to apply emerging principles and project management skills to standard and unpredictable workplace scenarios.

As you progress you’ll gain a detailed understanding of effective methods and control actions which can be applied within construction project management and the engineering process. The themes of sustainability, enterprise, employability and internationalisation are central to the programme of study, so you’ll be well equipped to forge a rewarding and successful career.

The course includes lots of opportunities for you to develop personal, interpersonal and project-personnel skills and study areas that are relevant to your work and interests.

Clifford Okeh - Course Leader
BSc, MSc, DIC MCIOB, MCABE C. Build E. MIET MSET FHEA.

Clifford has over 20 years’ experience working in industry and higher education. He has worked with leading construction companies such as Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering Limited UK. He is research active in Fibre Reinforced Concrete Structures (Experimentation and Numerical Modelling). He also has a wide range of teaching expertise in civil engineering and construction technology, construction management, and structural engineering.

The course opens up the chance to progress to doctoral studies, which some of our graduates have pursued to become academics/researchers. The course also paves the way for you to enrol as a student member of the Association for Project management (APM) during your studies, leading to the professional status of Chartered Project Professional with APM.

Learning and assessment

Throughout the course you’ll develop your knowledge and understanding through a series of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical workshops and projects. You’ll also study text books, research papers, journal articles and case study materials.

You’ll be assessed through written assignments, the research dissertation and oral presentations. Within each module the assessment methods are designed to contribute to your continuing development. Feedback is provided on a regular basis, identifying opportunities for improvement and providing periodic evaluations of progress.

A triple dissertation module completes the full nine module MSc and promotes philosophical approaches to research and investigation. You’ll select your research focus linked to areas that are both of personal interest and helpful for your career development.

The course is made up of seven modules arranged into three awards: Postgraduate Certificate in Construction Project Management; Postgraduate Diploma in Construction Project Management; and MSc in Construction Project Management.

For the Postgraduate Certificate everyone studies three modules. They are Risk and Value Management, Project Planning, Control and Analysis and Project Team and Leadership Development.

The Postgraduate Diploma is made up of six modules including two modules in Strategic Project Management and Advanced Construction Technology. You’ll study Technical Tools and Solutions for Achieving Project Success, including studies of typical projects and current issues relating to the practice and process of construction. A final module is Health and Safety Management.
