Our Nursing with Registered Nurse (Adult) course will enable you to develop the core skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours that are essential when you’re caring for adults who are experiencing health difficulties.
Course Overview
You’ll gain the skills required to practice adult nursing effectively and professionally in a variety of health and social care settings, with an emphasis on compassion, communication and dignity in care.
Along the way you’ll develop an appreciation of the importance of comprehensive person-centred assessment, care planning, care delivery, and inter-professional working. You’ll explore how health services are organised and delivered while gaining vital work experience. Half your time will be spent working within a professional practice, where you’ll develop a strong portfolio of clinical and interpersonal skills, preparing you for the next stage of your adult nursing career.
We have close links with healthcare providers across central Lancashire, including NHS Trusts across Preston and Fylde Coast, Fleetwood and Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan, Chorley, Southport and Ormskirk.
We can also find a placement for you with private healthcare providers and independent and voluntary sector organisations. These learning environments will provide you with a unique insight into how healthcare is managed in all settings, not just within the NHS. Our clinical placement providers are audited according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council professional regulatory requirements for learning and teaching in clinical practice. Each area has a dedicated member of academic staff attached to the placement, so that you can access support and advice. Our academic staff work in close contact with the NHS Trust Practice Education Facilitators.

Course delivery
Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

Our well-established adult nursing programmes produce highly employable graduates. An impressive 98% of our adult nursing undergraduates have gone onto employment or further study within six months (HESA 2018).

Learning and assessment
During your time with us you’ll spend around half your time at the University, where you’ll engage in a range of directed and self-directed study as an active learner. While on campus you’ll attend a combination of keynote lectures, discussions, seminars and clinical skills sessions, as well as engaging in debates and independent study.
You’ll spend the other half of your time working on practice placements within professional healthcare environments, including the National Health Service. Part of the placement experience is to help you to understand how modern nursing care is delivered to people experiencing a range of needs in various settings. You’ll also work closely alongside other professionals to enable you to gain a good understanding of how different professionals work together to deliver quality care for people.
You’ll have the opportunity to engage in skills development and simulated practice within our skills and simulation environments. This will allow you to practice the skills that you will be expected to reach proficiency in, as well as identifying where you need to focus your personal and professional development plans.
Our assessment strategy is designed to determine that you have met the necessary standards as set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Assignments are likely to include written reports, examinations and story boards. Throughout your placements you will also be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, behaviour and conduct that the public expects from nurses in all health and social care settings.
Pathway opportunities
The dual academic and professional qualification gained from completing this course is:
- Academic: MSc Pre- Registration Nursing (180 credits at Level 7)
- Professional: Registered Nurse (Adult) – registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
