Preparing students for careers in bioinformatics, computational biology combines coursework in biology, chemistry, math, and computer science to help students develop foundational scientific knowledge and the ability to use new technologies in analyzing scientific data.

Undergraduate students learn to access and interpret biological datasets, as well as how to design and execute a research plan. At each step of the way, Webster faculty teach students to have a greater appreciation of the global contexts in which research occurs and its global effects. Ultimately, students who earn a bachelor's degree in computational biology are prepared for a variety of careers in biological information analysis.

Points of Distinction

• Webster offers the only undergraduate computational biology program in Missouri.
• Small class sizes allow for personalized attention and faculty mentoring.
• Research-oriented, cross-disciplinary curriculum prepares graduates to be both immediately marketable in fields of biological sciences and related disciplines (such as data analytics) and highly competitive for MS or PhD graduate programs.
• Volunteer internships at external institutions that involve computer-programming skills or biological experimentation may be counted toward graduating credits.
• Every student graduating with a BS degree from the Department of Biological Sciences completes a research project of their choice, gaining first-hand experience designing and implementing a research project with mentorship from faculty at Webster, as well as the opportunity to engage professionals in the greater St. Louis region science community for mentorship.
