Are you a community activist with a Foundation Degree or other Level 5 qualification? Convert it to a BA (Hons) Community Leadership degree, hosted at our Burnley Campus, in just one year.
Good community leadership starts with good collaboration and team-working skills – our peer-led programme is a great way to develop these and prepare for a rewarding career.
This course is where like-minded individuals come together to share experiences and best practice. You will explore community leadership, politics, governance, and global society as part of a lively learning community. Underpinned by the teachings of Paulo Freire, you will gain a theoretical understanding of how to sustain community regeneration.
The teaching team are all practitioners and internationally recognised in their fields. You’ll be based at our Burnley Campus in Pennine Lancashire, where you will benefit from small class sizes and a friendly, supportive learning environment.

What you'll do
- The course is grounded in the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire, and uses action reflection praxis as a basis for learning.
- Access extra-curricular Freire-based learning opportunities and activities, including online training programmes, via the on-campus Freire Institute.
- You’ll undertake structured work experience through volunteering or community action. You will also be eligible for awards from the ILM as part of your programme.

Course delivery
Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

Future careers
Our graduates have entered careers in community development, public services management, education, youth work, politics, and social enterprise. Other graduates have also progressed to postgraduate study.
The course is designed to prepare you for community leadership roles within the third sector, the public sector, governance and politics, and also within an international context.
