International Hospitality and Tourism | MSc

About Program

Join our highly relevant and contemporary International Hospitality and Tourism Management MSc and become equipped with the specialist knowledge and skills required to succeed in this exciting and continually expanding industry.

What can I expect from this course?

This course allows you to analyse the practices and behaviour of businesses within hospitality and tourism and provides the opportunity to specialise in an area of interest whether this be in innovation and entrepreneurship, hospitality and events, or place and destination management.

In the second year, you will have an opportunity to undertake an Industry Consultancy Project allowing you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained during your first year of study to a real-life industry issue from a range of employers. This authentic learning context ensures that you experience what it feels like to work within a team on a contemporary project that has real relevance and impact. Working to a client's brief, with academic supervision, you will advance your ability to apply theoretical concepts and research skills to produce a practical recommendation to a challenging problem.*

*Be aware that all Advanced Practice with investigative consultancy project routes are similar to many of our 1-Year MSc with consultancy project routes, while 2-year Advanced Practice course spends more dedicated time in the Business Clinic, reflected on the total assessment input for the two 60 credit modules.

Is this course suitable for me?

This course is open to those from any undergraduate background who have an interest in the principles, theories and practices utilised within the hospitality and tourism management sectors.

Employment: How this course will aid your career

Throughout this postgraduate course you will gain practical management and entrepreneurial skills combined with theory that you will be able to apply on an international scale, preparing you for success in a wide range of careers. One of the optional modules also provides the opportunity to undertake a fieldtrip in Amsterdam, allowing you to see first hand how an international destination is managed.

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods, including: lectures, case discussions, seminars, practical exercises, and workshop activities supported by tutor-led directed learning. The focus will be on your application of theory to ‘real life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward.

As this is a Masters course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, reports, group work, presentations, and either the master’s dissertation, enterprise project or consultancy project.

You will learn in a vibrant and dynamic environment, supported by a team of research-active academics whose diverse backgrounds in the sector span planning and development surveying, the Civil Service, research in the Centre for Regional Economic Development, commercial property market analysis and international heritage consultancy.

Lecturers balance their teaching and research with external industry-related projects and they use this knowledge to inform your learning. This approach creates a research-rich, practice-based environment which will develop your critical abilities, problem solving skills and lay a firm foundation for a career in the property industry.

Our strong links with industry give you the opportunity to work on live projects as part of your course. We also invite industry professionals to deliver guest lectures and share their experiences. Learn from RICS chartered lecturers with extensive professional experience.
