Course overview
Physics is the fundamental science that underpins much of the technology we see around us. Modern communications, transport and energy systems all originate from advances in our understanding of physics. Our Physics course includes a wide range of research-informed modules, from optics and thermodynamics to quantum mechanics, microscopy and nuclear physics. Our modules combine theory, modelling, and hands-on inquiry-based laboratory sessions using modern equipment. The course is taught at Thornton Science Park, where you will be given the opportunity to work alongside our industrial partners via a wide range of summer placements, internships or an optional year to complete an industrial placement between the second and third year of study.
Why study this course with us?
Our BSc Physics course is recognised by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and prepares you for a challenging yet rewarding career in science. It is delivered at the University of Chester’s Thornton Science Park, a unique location where the Faculty of Science and Engineering is connected to on-site technology-based companies. Industrial relevance and interdisciplinary collaboration is something we are passionate about in the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. In each year of study, you are encouraged to work on industry-guided projects with companies on site or elsewhere in the UK or Europe via (i) our Work Based Learning placements, (ii) our Experiential Learning module, and (iii) your final-year project. In addition, the BSc Physics course is available with an optional placement year that can be taken between Level 5 and Level 6 of study.
A high proportion of your time will be spent in our modern laboratory facilities, equipped with industry-standard and research-quality instrumentation. Here, you will acquire the necessary laboratory and practical skills to supplement your scientific and technical knowledge.
At Thornton Science Park, you will acquire transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, as well as effective communication and presentation skills. Coupled with familiarity with scientific instrumentation, good understanding of the laws that govern the physical world and competency in applied mathematics, these will be of constant benefit as you aspire to develop your future career.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
