Law (Extended) | LLB(Hons)

About Program

Our extended law degree starts with a foundation year to prepare you for degree-level learning. You go to study the same modules offered on the three-year LLB course.

You will study essential areas of legal knowledge such as public law, land law, equity and trusts, contract law, criminal law and tort law. In your final year, you choose from a range of specialist modules, including commercial law, intellectual property law, financial services law, and international law.

With links to a range of legal, and related, employers in London, you'll have - as a law student - access to a range employability events, including talks and networking opportunities. You can also apply to assist volunteer lawyers on real cases at the university's Legal Advice Centre or apply to assist with the Innocence Project London.

How you will learn

The following data is based on the compulsory modules for this programme.*

* Compiled from modules taught on 2023-2024 courses.

Teaching

In a typical week learning takes place through a combination of:

Overall0123

You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.

Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

The typical student intake per year averages 100-130. Lectures are normally attended by larger groups, and seminars/ tutorials by smaller groups. This varies depending on the level of study and if modules are shared between degrees (i.e. final-year options may experience smaller class sizes).

Part-time study

This course can be studied part-time in some circumstances, but students may still need to attend on several/most weekdays, as required by their timetable. Contact us for more details.

Independent learning

Students must conduct their own reading, assignments, presentations and preparation for exams. You can use Stockwell Street library and online resources to support your reading and research. Additional support classes are available in some modules via Adobe Connect.

Students are encouraged to attend guest lectures and take part in placements, internships and mentoring schemes with a variety of employers in the legal and regulatory sectors.

The Legal Advice Centre enables students to work closely with volunteer lawyers and professionally qualified members of academic staff to provide advice to the public. The Innocence Project London enables students to apply to work on real cases and participate in extracurricular activities.

Overall workload

If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job.

Each 15 or 30-credit module you study represents around 150 or 300 study hours respectively. So, if you receive 72 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 228 hours of independent study to complete it successfully.

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of assessment methods depending on the modules chosen.

Overall0123

You can view how each module is assessed within our 'What you will study' section.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

Feedback summary

We aim to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days.
