About Program

Do you want to make a difference to the lives and educational futures of young children? Then follow your passion and explore early education with an internationally-recognised team of academics and researchers in DCU.

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) is a four-year undergraduate (Level 8) programme offered by the DCU Institute of Education, specifically through the School of Language, Literacy & Early Childhood Education. It aims to prepare students for professional roles in early years education (birth to six years), combining academic study with extensive placement experience to develop reflective, competent and ethically-informed practitioners.

Program Structure & Delivery

  • Placements: Approximately 1,000 hours of professional practice across various early childhood settings—from crèches and Naíonraí to family support agencies and special needs schools

  • Teaching Methods: A blend of formal lectures, workshops, small?group learning, seminars, practical labs (e.g. LEGO room with Bee-Bots, designing literacy and play resources), and reflective practice sessions.

Modules by Year

Year 1

Core introduction to child development, wellbeing, play, creativity (art & music), legal frameworks, and early-stage placement experience.

Year 2

Focus on curriculum planning, socio-dramatic play, cultural diversity, special educational needs, technology in learning, and continued fieldwork.

Year 3

Deeper exploration of psychology, community and family engagement, literacy and numeracy in ECE, participation, inquiry-based learning, and further placements. Year 3 students may also apply for an Erasmus exchange (e.g. Norway, Belgium, Hungary).

Year 4

Advanced topics including:

  • Relational pedagogy & partnerships

  • Philosophy & childhood

  • Transitions and change in ECE

  • Leadership in ECE

  • Dissertation (split across research methods and extended thesis)

  • Professional Practice 4

  • Optional module choice (e.g. Irish language for Naíonraí, Special Needs, Social Entrepreneurship, Uaneen contributing module).

Graduates of BECE will be able to:

Further Education Options

  • Professional Master of Education (Primary) if wishing to transition to primary school teaching—requires meeting entry criteria, including Irish language proficiency (TEG Level B1).

  • Master’s in Early Childhood Education (MEd ECE): part-time, research-driven Level-9 programme focused on policy, leadership, advanced pedagogical practice and research in early years settings.

  • Other postgraduate study in areas like mental health, family support, psychology, speech and language therapy or educational leadership.

International & Entrepreneurial Options
Many graduates pursue international careers or return home to launch early years programmes or kindergartens using play-based, inclusive frameworks developed during their studies.
