About Program

MSc Mechanical Engineering

There is strong demand for high-quality engineers with a postgraduate qualification in mechanical engineering and a good range of skills. This MSc Mechanical Engineering has been designed to help you achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and will develop the technical and non-technical skills needed to succeed in this industry.

The range of modules will enhance the depth of your knowledge, while developing the skills to manage people and projects. You will use state-of-the-art engineering analysis software, and employ appropriate analytical and computer-based techniques. Additionally, you will gain an awareness of wider issues such as environmental management and safety.

Your dissertation will allow you to research a specific topic, based on real issues that organisations face. Staff are active in research and/or consultancy, which brings relevant case studies and context to the subjects you will study.

What You Will Learn

  • Advanced Materials and Manufacture - 10 credits
  • Fatigue and Fracture - 10 credits
  • Further Computational Fluid Dynamics - 10 credits
  • Further Finite Analysis - 10 credits
  • Non-destructive Testing - 10 credits
  • Research Methods for Engineers - 10 credits
  • Industrial Heating Systems - 20 credits
  • Professional Engineering Management - 20 credits
  • Safety Health and Environmental Engineering - 20 credits
  • Dissertation - 60 credits

Direct Entry students with no prior knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) will also be given the option to enrol in the following modules:

  • Engineering Computational Analysis - 20 credits

Facilities

Our Mechanical Engineering facilities are excellent. They include:

  • Well-equipped computer rooms using state of the art (industry standard) design and analysis software. (SolidWorks, Ansys, FEA and CFD, LS-Dyna, SolidCAM, Simul8, etc.), with a cluster (Super Computer) for use on high end computational activities.
  • Dedicated project rooms for all cohorts, access to laser cutter and a four-axis CNC router.
  • Composite manufacturing facilities, including autoclaves.
  • Additive manufacturing facilities (3D printing), laser scanner, wind tunnel, extensive material testing facilities, as well as laboratories with equipment for supplementing teaching in all core subjects, mechanics, dynamics, materials, thermodynamics, fluid-dynamics and control.
  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) facilities.
  • Access to technical staff in our workshops which include CNC machining centre, lathes and milling machine, drills, etc, for use on all project work undertaken.
  • Large open access multi discipline built area for projects.
  • Well-equipped Formula Student build area.

Career

Mechanical engineers work in areas as diverse as design, research and development, environmental engineering, numerical analysis, computer modelling, use of materials, and control systems. In such a competitive industry, having a postgraduate qualification in mechanical engineering will improve your career prospects and mechanical engineering graduates are likely to progress to occupy senior positions in the engineering industry and related sectors.

Graduates may also progress on to an engineering PhD or engineering research degree.

Entry Requirement

A minimum 2:2 Honours degree in mechanical engineering, although related engineering disciplines may be considered.

The course welcomes international applicants and requires an English level of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component or equivalent.
