A Criminology and Sociology degree explores how and why crimes are committed and the changing nature of society and inequality in the contemporary world.

Covering two distinct areas of study, this joint Honours degree enables you to explore two topical and challenging disciplines.

What you will study

You will study a mix of criminology and sociology modules throughout the course. Each year of study you will be required to evenly split your module choices between the two disciplines.

Year One

Criminology modules:

Sociology modules:

  • Violence and Conflict
  • Equality and Diversity

Year Three

Criminology modules:

  • Critical Issues in Criminal Investigations
  • Understanding Homicide
  • Terrorism, Security and the War on Terror

Sociology modules:

  • Conflict, War and Peace
  • Global Studies

Careers

The course gives you a solid foundation for professional training in social work, probation, youth justice, youth and community work and research. Other popular career routes include the police, prison service and other criminal justice agencies, as well as protection and victim support services. This degree has direct relevance for graduates seeking entry into new careers in areas such as intelligence analysis and crime reduction officers.

The ability to master two academic subjects demonstrates a high level of organisational skill and enables you to enter a variety of rewarding careers. Besides gaining knowledge of two complementary subjects, you will develop key skills that employers value such as evaluating evidence and making conclusions, writing reports, the application of IT and the confidence to present logical reasoned arguments.
