About Program

Overview

Chemical engineering brings together science, engineering practice and design, with biotechnology to make products on a large scale.

Biotechnology uses knowledge at the molecular level of living systems to devise strategies to solve important practical problems, such as controlling disease and making the environment safer.

These integrated skills can be applied to environmental management, agriculture and natural resource management, as well as a range of biological-based products and processes.

This double degree covers the application of chemical engineering and biotechnology methodologies and technologies for better environmental management, in order to:

  • prevent, diagnose and cure disease
  • improve crop plants and livestock
  • detect pollutants and contaminants
  • use organisms to produce chemicals, including drugs, food and agrichemicals.

Career

Graduates work in research, production and testing positions, with government and commercial industry.

Areas of employment include:

  • government departments (including CSIRO and Melbourne Water)
  • medical research institutes (including WEHI)
  • biotechnology manufacturers (including CSL)
  • hospitals
  • universities
  • secondary teaching
  • private industry
  • forensics
  • food processing.
Entry Requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification) with a minimum average of 70% (check calculator below).

Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognized post-secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.

Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. Your application will still need to be assessed and accepted.

If you don't meet the entry requirements, there may be other RMIT programs you are eligible for that can lead you to your preferred program.
