ABOUT THE COURSE
Do you have a passion for computing? Are you fascinated by modern technologies? This British Computer Society accredited degree programme focuses on the technical aspects of computing, placing a strong emphasis on programming skills. This will help you to attain the vital technical knowledge required to pursue a range of IT careers, as well as the transferable employability skills needed to secure your first role.
This hands-on degree programme encourages students to develop an extensive knowledge of computer programming. Students have the opportunity to develop these skills by designing, building and implementing computer systems, culminating in a major final-year software development project.
Students are able to select optional units in the third and second year of study. These units include: human-computer interaction (HCI), applications of artificial intelligence, and network management. Selecting optional units allows computing students to tailor their degree to an area they would like to progress into after graduation.
The experienced teaching team maintain a strong network of industry and employer contacts. Students are encouraged to utilise these networks to seek work experience placements. Previous students have secured placements at GSK, Accenture and Clevertouch.
Students will have the chance to showcase their final year projects at an end of year degree show, industry representatives are invited to attend - and in previous years students have secured employment or work experience as a result.

Course graduates possess a broad array of skills and specialisms, making them well suited for a diverse range of computing roles, from software development or IT support to web development and networking.

INDUSTRY LINKS
You have the option to spend your third year on an industrial placement, developing valuable hands-on experience and returning to complete your degree in the fourth year.
Previous placements have included large, well-known companies such as IBM, GSK, Peer 1 Hosting, Accenture and Clevertouch, as well as small boutique software development agencies.
Students are also encouraged to take part in industry competitions and events, such as the Microsoft Imagine Cup, while our Solent Creatives agency provides opportunities to undertake small software commissions with real clients.
PLACEMENTS
The work placement variant of the course provides students with a chance to gain valuable real-world experience in a paid role.
Recent placements have been with IBM, Accenture, Roland Berger, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Visa, NATS and GSK, as well as local authorities and many smaller companies.
Students undertaking the optional work placement variant of the course will find a suitable work placement between years two and three, with support from the course team.
