ABOUT THE COURSE
Are you fascinated by how things are made? Looking for a challenging and varied career? Solent University’s engineering design and manufacture programme will help you to develop theoretical and practical engineering skills for use in both electronic and mechanical projects. This course also places a strong emphasis on employability, helping to ensure you graduate with a relevant and sought-after engineering skillset.
Engineering design and manufacture at Solent will provide students with a solid grounding in essential engineering concepts including mechanics, electronics, drawing, CAD and manufacturing. Critically, past students have been able to gain an insight into real-life engineering problems, tackling projects defined for them by our network of industry contacts.
Students benefit from a range of specialist facilities including well-equipped laboratories for electronics, mechanics, material testing and manufacturing. These laboratories feature the latest prototyping equipment, and software such as PSpice, NI Multisim, Solid Works and CES.
The engineering academic group’s extensive network of industry contacts has provided past students with the opportunity to work on live briefs, helping them to develop transferable analytical, problem solving, team working and business management skills.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Wessex Round Table of Inventors (WRTI) hold regular professional development events on campus. These events give students the opportunity to earn Continued Professional Development (CPD) points and network with their industry colleagues.
YOUR FUTURE
Graduates will have a wide range of career options. These include different types of design engineering; production and manufacturing; electrical-mechanical systems engineering; or positions in project planning and management of manufacturing operations.

INDUSTRY LINKS
The engineering group has extensive industrial links developed and fostered over many years, giving you the opportunity to work on industry-related problems and incorporate live briefs into the assessment.
Many students work closely with employers or local companies on projects within the course, and we’ll encourage you to participate in practical work-based initiatives.
Previous industry partners have included Rolls-Royce, Marine Concepts, BAE Systems, Stannah, Saab and Seaeye.
PLACEMENTS
First-year full-time students have the chance to be partnered with a company in the industry, providing at least one visit in the first year. This close relationship will give students the opportunity to apply for any holiday vacancies or other staff requirements.
In their final year, students will carry out an assessed consultancy project with a relevant company.
