Are you looking for a fast-paced career in journalism? From front-page scoops to social news online, Solent University journalism graduates are equipped with the full range of multimedia skills to build a career in newspapers, TV, radio or digital media.
Solent University’s Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations subject area was ranked 17th in the Guardian University League Tables 2019.
Taught by current industry professionals and leading academics, Solent’s BA (Hons) Journalism degree takes a fresh approach to journalism education. This challenging, multi-faceted course will help you learn the skills to meet the demands of a constantly evolving media industry.
You’ll learn how to find, tell and sell stories to publications and target readers. You’ll use your professional writing, production and creative digital journalism skills to create engaging content across a number of platforms. Media law and the relationship between journalism and politics are explored in depth, and you’ll develop your research skills, along with practical techniques such as investigative and data journalism. Optional units, such as travel journalism and presenting skills allow you to tailor the course to meet your own career ambitions.
YOUR FUTURE
The course equips students with strong journalism and communication skills, and opportunities to develop the contacts to build a media career. The skills you gain on this course also prepare you for a wide range of careers in other areas, such as politics, commercial business, publishing and research.

PLACEMENTS
Work experience is an essential part of the degree and is assessed at all levels of the programme. You are expected to source your own work placements with support and guidance from the course team. You will need to undertake at least three weeks of work placement during your degree.
Past students have been placed with Sky, the BBC, NewsQuest and regional titles across Britain, as well as in corporate communication departments for companies such as Rolls Royce.
You’ll also be able to participate in industry practice during the course. This can be either in external organisations such as suitable media, communications, media or press offices; or based within Solent Press/Solent Creatives at the University.
