ANALYTICAL AND FORENSIC CHEMISTRY
The MRes Analytical & Forensic Chemistry program is designed to introduce the students to a wide range of industry-standard and novel techniques applicable in forensic analysis. Career opportunities are available not only in the forensic sector, but the key problem-solving and analytical skills developed in forensic and analytical science are widely sought after in many other industrial sectors including the oil, gas, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
The program promotes the enhancement of technical understanding, with emphasis on problem-solving and team/group working, awareness and where possible, the practice of latest developments in the discipline, and increased capability for independent learning and work through case studies and projects.
These will encourage students to accept responsibilities, formulating ideas proactively, dealing with open-ended and unfamiliar problems, plan and developing strategies, implementing and executing agreed plans, leading and managing teams where required, evaluating achievement against specification and plan, and decisions making. The elements within the curriculum of this program aim to prepare students for their future.
MODULES
- Advanced Research Skills: With a focus on developing research ideas, undertaking a literature review, and planning a research study this module develops the skill base and subject knowledge of the students so that research work can be effectively undertaken.
- Forensic Analytical Chemistry: Students will explore and consolidate the concepts of analytical chemistry and its applications in both forensic investigation and research. Knowledge and skills in this field, including sample preparation, instrumental analysis methods and protocols, data processing and interpretation, and quality control/management, etc will be key.
- Negotiated Learning: A highly tailored and independent research focus gives students the opportunity to review their current knowledge base and allows them to negotiate the required learning and research relevant to their personal or professional development and their subject of expertise.
- Professional Practice & Placement: An introduction to a range of roles, the codes of conduct, accreditations, and certifications associated will help students focus will be on personal reflection, professional development, and transferable skills as students undertake 100 hours of placement activity.
- Dissertation: Pilot Study: Students begin their primary research on a small scale expanding their knowledge of the appropriate practical research methods and exploring challenges and limitations in the early stages of their proposed project.
- Dissertation: Research Project: Students will undertake an advanced piece of original research putting in to practice the knowledge and understanding, practical, intellectual, and transferable skills developed throughout the program within the context of a longer-term project
Graduates of this program could go on to work in:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Toxicology
- Forensic Science
- Crime Scene Science
- Research Scientist

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
