Overview
Master advanced data science tools and techniques and learn to apply them across a range of industries, with our Applied Data Science conversion degree in Cambridge.
Data science promises to enhance technology, business models, and decision-making across a range of sectors – from manufacturing to social care; and cybersecurity to banking.
There’s strong demand for data scientists. Our Applied Data Science Masters degree will give you the knowledge and analytical skills you need to join this rapidly growing sector.
As it’s a postgraduate conversion course, you don’t need a degree in computing or data science to apply.
Study at ARU in the center of Cambridge, and benefit from a week-long placement as part of your course.
Our MSc Applied Data Science degree takes you, step by step, through the major building blocks of data science.
By studying at ARU, you’ll gain highly marketable skills such as programming, data acquisition and cleaning, data analysis and feature extraction, data visualization, data mining, and machine learning. You’ll become proficient in advanced data science tools and techniques too – such as deep learning and predictive models – and learn about artificial intelligence.
And finally, you’ll complete a data science research project, based on your real-life experiences of working in a part of our University.
We’re always focused on the needs of industry and the real-world application of data science. And so, we incorporate real datasets and industry-simulated projects into our course modules. You’ll find this helps you to understand the challenges and constraints that organizations face – and hone your skills and expertise accordingly.
As a graduate, you’ll be ready to apply your data science skills to a range of careers
Study Plan for the master by A.R.U
We start with a general introduction to data science techniques, exploring the core maths concepts that data analysts use through a mixture of lectures and hands-on practical sessions.
We’ll also look at high-level computer programming using Python, a powerful yet intuitive programming language. You won’t need any previous programming experience to take part.
Alongside programming, we look at the principles of data mining and machine learning, so that you’re able to analyze data, gather insights, and apply those insights to real-world challenges.
Crucially, we look at how data science is used, designing and developing data-driven prediction models. You’ll practice with tools such as powerful Python libraries including NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Scikit-learn, and Seaborn.
And finally, you’ll work on a Major Project. This starts with a one-week placement in an area of our University. You’ll use the week to identify the topic of your Major Project, which takes the form of a 10,000-word report. You’ll identify issues, evaluate information, determine solutions, develop data science artifacts as appropriate, process data, and present your findings. Your project supervisor will support you all the way.
We'll assess you in a number of ways, including time-constrained assessments, coursework assignments, and a Major Project (dissertation). Our module case studies and Major Project assess your ability to analyze situations, identify key issues, select, synthesize and apply techniques and skills, and evaluate the appropriateness of solutions when compared to industrial practice. Your dissertation will be based on a real-world scenario.
Careers
Data scientist roles have grown over 650% since 2012, with machine learning engineers, data scientists, and big data engineers ranking among the top emerging jobs*. But there's a recognized skills gap both in the UK and internationally.
Employers highlight the importance of data science and its potential to revolutionize a number of industries while creating significant employment opportunities for data analysts, machine learning specialists, and data specialists.
Our Employability Service is here to help give you the best chance of landing the job you want, with advice on CV writing, interview techniques, and job hunting – and of course, you'll benefit from a week-long placement as part of your course.
Graduation doesn't have to be the end of your time with us. You might decide to continue your academic career and join a research program at ARU. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and save £400 on your fees.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
