ABOUT THE COURSE

Solent University’s acoustic and audio engineering degree will support you to develop the fundamental technical expertise and practical knowledge highly sought by employers, helping you to kick-start a fantastic career after graduation.
Audio engineers specialise in the design and configuration of recording, playback and amplification technologies, combining a high level of technical expertise with operational skills and a practical knowledge of media industry practices. Employment opportunities are endless, and include fields as diverse as acoustic material manufacturing, acoustic signature recognition and reduction, active noise and vibration control, aerospace engineering, architectural acoustical design, enclosure and sound attenuator design, loudspeaker design, measurement and analysis instrumentation, sonar systems, speech recognition, mobile telephone design, vehicle noise control and vibration isolation.
Throughout the degree you will be supported to develop a solid grounding in the core mathematics, electronics and computing principles fundamental to audio and acoustic engineering; and will study a range of units including Building Acoustics, Transducer Design and Environmental Noise Control.
You will undertake acoustic measurement and laboratory work using a wide range of state-of-the-art test equipment such as calibrated sound level meters; a 16-channel data acquisition and signal processing system; head and torso simulators; a laser vibrometer and industry-leading ambisonics recording and playback equipment. You will also have access to cutting-edge simulation and modelling software including MATLAB, NI Labview, CadnaA, CATT Acoustic and EASE.
Thanks to the course teams close links with industry you will also benefit from a range of guest speakers and industrial site visits. Recent speakers have included the managing director of Vanguardia Consulting, an independent film sound designer and representatives from Advanced Communications Solutions.

Acoustics is a branch of engineering used in virtually all industry sectors, from designing new auditoriums to making the latest vacuum cleaner quieter.
Audio engineers specialise in the design and configuration of recording, playback and amplification technologies, combining a high level of technical expertise with operational skills and a practical knowledge of media industry practices.
In acoustics, you could be involved in the planning process for new airports or motorways, or the design of the latest skyscraper – many graduates will go into consulting, while others will work for technology firms improving the sound quality of the latest flat-screen TV. Others will work for local authorities, the government or the military.

INDUSTRY LINKS
The course team maintain close links with alumni and as a result are well placed to arrange work experience and placement opportunities for students from level four to level six, as well as internship schemes upon graduation. Students that participate in these opportunities frequently secure their first job as a result of the experience gained.
These links also enable regular guest lectures from industry on specialist subjects, as well as industry visits to see and use specialist equipment.PLACEMENTS
Students are offered a variety of work experience opportunities throughout their time at Solent. This includes working at summer festivals aiding the production of content in roles such as sound assistant or noise monitoring. Recent students have worked at Glastonbury, IOW Festival and Victorious.
Placements with companies can range from the summer period or an entire year out of study. These have recently been in the production of hardware/software and for companies such as Dolby, Techex and Focusrite.
