This year will prepare you for the rest of your course. We’ll focus on general skills such as researching and referencing, numeracy and ICT, and communication. But we’ll also start to look at topics such as art history, and develop our practical design skills using both traditional and digital media.

Design can reveal a lot about the people who use a space, and the community they inhabit. On our BA (Hons) Interior Design degree you’ll learn to create effective design proposals, while considering how to develop spaces that connect stories with people.
Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to propose design questions, such as: How can public spaces cater for multiple activities and users? How much space do we need to live in? How do major brands reinvent themselves to respond to new markets?
We think your ideas and design skills are important. You’ll develop these by working in small teams at different stages of your degree, sometimes alongside students from other creative courses.
There’s also the opportunity to get inspired on European field trips, and to study abroad for a semester – with funding available to help cover the cost.
With small studio groups, you’ll engage in a consistent conversation with your tutors too. It’s one of the reasons our Design & Crafts courses ranked 8th in the UK for 'Satisfied with Course' and 3rd for 'Satisfied with Teaching' (The Guardian University Guide 2020).
With an eye on your future career, you’ll receive ongoing support to find placements and work experience and you can also take an optional placement year.
You can see your designs become reality in live projects and foster professional relationships through Design Bench, a series of industry networking meetings.

As well as our dedicated interior design studio, you’ll have use of facilities including:
- a printmaking workshop
- a 3D workshop
- a digital photography lab
- photography studios and darkrooms
- Mac and PC suites.
Visit, Collaborate and Exhibit
As a BA (Hons) Interior Design student you’ll have the chance to:
- visit exhibitions and events in London and other European cities
- collaborate on projects with design courses in the Netherlands and Australia
- show your work in exhibitions such as Free Range in London, and Cambridge Festival of Ideas
- feature your work on our interior design Instagram page, which is followed by many professionals.

Careers
Our BA (Hons) Interior Design degree will prepare you to work with architects or in spatial design practices on residential, commercial, hospitality, health, lighting, entertainment or furniture design projects. You might decide to set up your own interior design practice after you graduate.
The creative skills you develop will also help you find a career in the visual arts, film, television, event and theatre design, or exhibition and museum design; while the management skills will be useful for project management roles on creative projects.
Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us, of course. You might choose to continue your studies with one of our full- or part-time our Masters degrees. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and get 20% off your fees.
