About Program

ABOUT THE COURSE

Are you interested in a career in sport and exercise science? This degree specialises in physiological, psychological and biomechanical theories, focusing on how these can be used to enhance human performance. You’ll be able to put these theories into practice in the University’s industry-standard labs, as well as through internship opportunities. You can specialise in your third year, allowing you to hone your expertise further towards your specific career ambitions.

BSc (Hons) Applied Sport Science scored 95% overall satisfaction for NSS 2019.

Accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), this degree is founded upon the underlying principles of physiology, psychology and biomechanics. The course combines these scientific principles with highly practical skills, helping to prepare students for a career in the sport science industry.

Units and assessments have been created to develop key employability skills such as communicating scientific results; teaching and developing specific skills with athletes; and planning, organising and conducting research projects. To complement their degree studies, students are encouraged to prepare for BASES and UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) professional accreditation.

To help prepare students for a career in the sports industry, a hands-on approach is encouraged. Through professional placements and applied practice students gain first-hand experience of working with teams and athletes in a high-performance environment. With support and mentoring from the course team, past students have provided sport science support to Premiership rugby and football players, Olympic athletes, and national teams.

YOUR FUTURE

The skills you’ll develop on this course open up a wide range of career opportunities in sport and exercise science, across every sport imaginable. You could work with professional, elite or Olympic athletes, ensuring they maintain peak fitness in world-class competitions, or with hospitals and health organisations to develop training and recovery programmes for patients suffering injury or disability. You could also work with schools or even teach, developing fitness programmes and encouraging the next generation of athletes to excel.

  • Teaching (primary, secondary and tertiary)
  • Sport and exercise physiologist

INDUSTRY LINKS

Staff who contribute to the Applied Sport Science degree course are currently involved in sport science support with a range of professional and national sporting organisations (England Netball, Southampton Football Club and the Saints Foundation). These links support course development by keeping staff up-to-date with good practice and provide ‘real world’ evidence for students to benefit from.

Some staff are also accredited by the UK’s professional body (BASES) and have the capacity to supervise students on BASES’ Supervised Experience scheme. One staff member is on the Board of BASES.

Having such strong links with the subject professional body ensure that developments in the course provision can be more easily matched with the recommendations and requirements of relevant organisations within the industry. Key industry guest speakers have delivered lectures on contemporary issues within the sport science industry.

PLACEMENTS

Placements are embedded within some of the units and various levels of support will be provided to help students find suitable placements. Students have previously had the opportunity to apply for optional internships with University partner Southampton FC and a range of other top sports organisations. These include Reed’s High Performance Academy, Reading FC, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Queens Park Rangers FC, London Irish RFC, Hampshire Cricket, Spire Hospital, Spire Perform Centre, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Students may get the opportunity to assist staff with consultancy projects involving athletes from these organisations, as well as with Olympic athletes and Salisbury Triathlon Club, while aspiring teachers can gain experience through school placements and after-hours sports clubs.
