ABOUT THE COURSE
Do you want to work with athletes to improve their sporting potential? Could you provide specialist support and guidance aligned to their individual needs and aspirations? Solent’s Sport Performance Coaching degree will help you to better understand the principles of sport science. You'll also develop the highly practical skills required for a career coaching athletes from a range of sports.
Students study relevant and applied theory - sports science and nutrition, coaching principles, skills development, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, and performance and technique analysis - building essential underpinning knowledge for a career in coaching. This is combined with practical training and professional placement opportunities, giving students the chance to put theory into practice.
Work placements are integral to the course. First year students are provided with a placement with the Saints Foundation, Southampton FC’s community-based charity. During their second year, students deliver coaching sessions at local schools, arranged by the course team. Students are also expected to find their own additional placements, with assistance from the University.
To further boost employability, students have the opportunity to gain National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications, as well as enrol on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at a discounted rate.

INDUSTRY LINKS
Many of the course team are currently or have previously been involved with sports coaching and associated sports science disciplines, including research. Through this, the team have formed a number of relationships with industry. This has led to students having placement opportunities with the RFU, Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation, local schools, etc.
Key industry guest speakers have also previously delivered lectures, including Commonwealth and Olympic coaches and athletes, and coaches and support staff from Premiership and international-level football clubs.PLACEMENTS
