As well as such practical experience, you will have the option to undertake additional professional qualifications such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Certificate, the Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) Certificate, Target Group Index (TGI) certification and the Adobe Creative Suite certification.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The course team has strong links with industry at a local, regional and national level, leading to a weekly guest lecture programme where leading industry professionals visit Solent to talk to students about current industry practice.

We also hold regular trips to agencies, and a number of units benefit from live client briefs and industry partners working with you on projects and assessments. While our annual Meet the Professionals event gives you the opportunity to chat face-to-face with Solent graduates whose successful careers in the industry provide an invaluable glimpse into marketing and advertising practice.

CIM

The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). The curriculum is closely aligned to the CIM and provides the benefit of two exemptions for the CIM Certificate in Professional Marketing and one exemption for the Diploma in Professional Marketing. These allow the student to take the minimum of additional examinations to obtain a CIM qualification while they study.

IDM Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing (Cert DDM)

Based on the syllabus provided by the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM), your Direct and Digital Marketing unit has been approved and endorsed by the IDM. This unit gives you direct access to contemporary industry collateral and the opportunity to gain the IDM professional certificate.

The Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) powers the learning offering of the Data & Marketing Association. The Certificate is designed to give you the opportunity to gain an industry recognised professional qualification whilst at university. Providing you with the key knowledge that will help you hit the ground running in your first marketing job and give you a head-start on your professional learning journey.

You can also obtain the Target Group Index (TGI) certification run by Kantar Media and the APM Professional qualification in Project management.

PLACEMENTS

Work experience is an essential part of the degree and is assessed at year two (level 5) and year three (level 6) of the programme. Students are expected to source their own work placements, with support and guidance from the course team and the University’s careers service, Solent Futures. The minimum requirement varies, but is not less than 1 week's work experience per academic year.

During the course you will also have the option to carry out a work placement year, offering you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience before going on to your final year of study.

As part of the Employability and Work Placement Skills at the end of the second year (L5), students must complete two separate two-week work experience placements during the summer break between year two (L5) and year three (L6). Support is provided by the unit leader and Solent Futures.

Students are able to participate in industry practice during the course. This can be either in external organisations such as suitable media, communications, media or press offices, or based within the University’s Solent Press or Solent Creatives agencies.
