Our four-year Civil Engineering MEng course will give you all the technical skills and intellectual know how to be a civil engineer in a constantly changing world.
Our MEng course focusses on infrastructure engineering and will give you the practical skills and experience to work on multi-million pound infrastructure projects. You’ll develop crucial mathematical, technical and design skills that all civil engineers need, while taking a more holistic view of the overall design of a built environment which is resilient to future challenges.
At ARU, our research philosophy focusses on future cities, and how infrastructure and communities need to adapt and transform themselves in response to future challenges such as climate change, resource and energy scarcity and an aging and increasing population. Such challenges cannot be tackled by one discipline alone: professionals across the sector need to collaborate to create smart and innovative solutions. As a graduate, you will be ideally placed to work in such multidisciplinary teams, responding to these global challenges. You’ll become a creative problem solver and a confident communicator, able to work well independently and in a team.
Our facilities are the perfect places to test and research different materials and designs throughout your Civil Engineering course. You’ll work in specialist labs for geotechnics, hydraulics, structures, engineering materials and concrete testing. You'll go out on site visits, and hear guest lecturers from industry. You might even want to enhance your skills and CV by doing a work placement year.
This course includes, at a subsidised cost, a week-long residential field trip to Constructionarium in the first year. Constructionarium is a hands-on construction experience for students; participants construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. The principle is to link academic institutes with industry and to ensure that you can apply your knowledge in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

Careers
The MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course prepares you for a design, technical or managerial role in civil engineering. Initially, this position is likely to be with either a multi-disciplinary consulting company, a civil engineering design practice, a large infrastructure organisation or a contracting organisation. After gaining some experience and completing professional qualifications graduates will be able to work as a self-employed consultant or start their own specialist consultancy practice.
Our civil engineering graduates work in a range of project and lead engineer roles in multi-national organisations including Skanska, Network Rail, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, Carillion, SETRACO Nigeria, Environment Agency and Transport for London as well as in local authorities across the UK.
We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
Employers, consultants and clients in the construction industry value professional qualifications and so the MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering has been presented for accreditation by the Joint Board of Moderators who represent several organisations including the Institution of Civil Engineers, one of the main professional bodies representing civil engineering employers and civil engineers. An accredited MEng provides all the academic learning required to become a Chartered Engineer.
Accredited courses are designed to deliver the skills required by employers which means that successful students are highly desirable to civil engineering organisations.
