Overview
Study your Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) at ARU and apply its technologies to some of society’s most complex problems. On this Chelmsford-based degree you’ll be hands-on, going on site and tackling practical exercises in our specialist workshops. Get your hard hat on for a week-long construction project under real site conditions and gain further experience on a placement year. After graduating from our Civil Engineering BEng degree course, you can work towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.Designing and building structures like bridges, roads, airports and flood defences demands a high degree of technical skill. Our Civil Engineering BEng course will teach you to approach civil engineering projects competently, responsibly, ethically and safely.
Civil engineering changes our world – from buildings and transport to the environment and civil protection. It covers everything from creative concepts to physical construction and maintenance. Designing and building structures like bridges, roads, airports and flood defences demands a high degree of technical skill.
On our newly designed course your learning will be based around the civil engineering project and hands-on learning, giving you the chance to immediately apply the theory you learn in class to address the challenges of the project. You will learn how to carry out site investigations, select the best materials for the job, analyse and design structures and engineering systems, plan the construction process and assess and mitigate the environmental impact of the project using our specialist workshops and labs. You will learn how to carry out land surveys and use state of the art CAD systems and specialist software to design and analyse complex systems.
When studying our Civil Engineering course, you’ll learn a range of transferable skills, including how to manage projects and contracts; statistics; management techniques; and principles of IT, preparing you for industry work, advising clients, working closely with other engineers and stake holders. You’ll become a creative problem solver and a confident communicator, able to work well independently and in a team.
What is the difference between the BEng and the BSc?
Our BSc (Hons) course focuses on the contractor and production so if it is the construction site that excites you, then this is course for you. If you are interested in the design and analysis of infrastructure then the BEng(Hons) will give you the theoretical framework to work in consultancy.
So what is an MEng?
The three-year BEng and BSc degrees are both accredited, however to reach CEng (Chartered Status) you will need to go on and do a Masters degree to apply for this status. An MEng is a four-year course that incorporates a BEng degree with a postgraduate year, giving you the ability to apply for CEng status at the end of your course.
This degree is accredited as:
- fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

Additional study information
- Placements
This course gives you the opportunity to take a work placement year between years 2 and 3 of your studies. You’ll get experience of seeking and securing a job and working in an industry relating to your course. You’ll also get the practical experience and industry contacts to benefit your studies and enhance your long-term career prospects.
Although they can’t be guaranteed, we can work with you to find a placement using our contacts with a large number of employers. You’ll have regular contact with one of our course tutors and be supported by a supervisor from your placement company. Together they’ll monitor your performance and give you feedback.
- Careers
We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
Civil engineers can specialise in two areas – design and production. Our course prepares you for both.
- Design civil engineers work mainly in offices, looking at the need for projects and how a particular project can be achieved.
- Production civil engineers work and plan on-site, check the quality of work, and oversee schedules and budgets.
Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us. If you would like to continue your studies and develop further skills with us, we offer a wide range of full-time and part-time postgraduate courses. If your goal is CEng (Chartered Engineer) status then you will need to complete a technical Masters like our MSc Civil Engineering course.
