About Program

4 years with foundation

This year will prepare you for the rest of your course. We’ll focus on general skills such as researching and referencing, numeracy and ICT, and communication. But we’ll also look at topics including classical mechanics, computer science, programming and coding. Plus, there’s a focus on developing mathematical skills.

Introduction

Design, simulate and build a variety of electronic systems in advanced and state-of-the-art labs, on our accredited Electronic Engineering degree in Chelmsford.

In our electronics laboratories in Chelmsford, you’ll use industry-standard software that is applied on hardware to creatively design, simulate and build electronic systems, and develop your creative problem-solving skills.

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), this course offers a placement year in industry and leads to Incorporated Engineer status.

Our Electronic Engineering BEng (Hons) degree course will give you detailed knowledge of a branch of technology which is vital to 21st-century life in medical devices, mobile phones, 5G applications, mechatronics and automated control. It will prepare you for a career at the cutting edge of technology development with high rate of employability.

Throughout the Electronic Engineering course, you’ll focus on the central topics in electronics while learning to design and build microprocessors, digital design, automation control, embedded systems and data communications. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop certain skills in more detail to specialise on an area of interest.

By the time you graduate, you’ll be a creative problem-solver and be able to design systems and components in every field of life. You’ll also be able to consider the social, environmental and economic implications of different aspects of electronics. You will be in the heart of converting cities into smart cities.

You have the option to take a placement year as part of your course, and gain valuable work experience with industry.

As well as getting hands-on experience in our labs, there’s the chance to:

  • hear from professional engineers in lectures
  • show your work to companies
  • take an optional placement year, and gain valuable work experience.

Specialist laboratories

Electronic Engineering students at ARU benefit from:

Institution of Engineering and Technology

Our three-year degree course meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer. It also fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc.

Whether you're studying entirely online or through a blend of on-campus and online learning from September 2020, you'll need a computer and reliable internet access to successfully engage with your course. A small number of our courses require additional technical specifications or specialist materials. Our published entry requirements are a guide only and our decision will be based on your overall suitability for the course as well as whether you meet the minimum entry requirements. We don't accept AS level qualifications on their own for entry to our undergraduate degree courses. However for some degree courses a small number of tariff points from AS levels are accepted as long as they're combined with tariff points from A levels or other equivalent level 3 qualifications in other subjects.

Careers

At ARU, we work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.

Careers in electrical engineering range from pure research through product design and development, to industrial and business management.

You’ll be able to choose from jobs in medical electronics, environmental monitoring, microelectronics, sound technology, biophysics, power, transport, media, engineering, industrial process control, construction and building services, and teaching.

Throughout the course, there’s help with your CV and a personal development plan. You’ll go on company visits and some lectures are delivered by working engineers. You might even get a job offer from the companies that we invite to see students' work.
