MASTER IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Structural Engineering is a special branch of Civil Engineering/Applied Mechanics which focuses on the use of the analysis and design of a various structure that includes residential building, public building, bridges, roof trusses, and its components like walls, beams, columns, and foundation. The scope is not limited to only the design of the structure it also includes dynamic forces like wind analysis, earthquake and ensures the stability and safety of the structures. It is also concerned with developing the new materials for its use as engineering material the students pursuing this course study idea and various research methods to prevent any damage to the structure during the entire design period of the structure it should stand without cracks and excessive deformation. Further, it also includes the repair and rehabilitation of distressed structures. With the increase in infrastructure demand all over the world including India, professionals with Structural Engineering are in high demand in Core companies, MNC consultancy firms, Government sectors, Railways, and Bridge construction as well as in academics and R & D sectors.
Educational Objectives
The course in Structural Engineering is designed to fulfill the following objectives:
- To provide excellent Structural engineering knowledge
- To make aware the students about the state-of-art knowledge to analyze and design the various structures
- To equip the students with good technological skills pertaining to analyses and design structure through software
- To produce international level competitive engineers who can solve the challenges of global problems
- To build confidence and inculcate creativity among engineers.
- To impart humanity and honesty values and ethics to the students.
Scope of Employment
Everybody uses one or another structure for their survival. With the development in various infrastructures in plains, hilly regions, deserts, and marine areas there are great challenges involved in designing the super as well as sub-structure of the structures to safely sustain various loads. The life of a structural engineer is full of such challenges. The student with a Master’s degree in Structural engineering has the following scope of employment as….
- Structure engineer
- Site engineer
- Material testing engineer: certify and test the engineering materials
- Bridge Engineer: to monitor and control the activities pertaining to analyses, design, and construction of bridges
- Dam safety engineer: monitor and control the seepage through earthen dams
- Highway/Railway/airfield engineer: Monitor and control the quality of the sub-grade construction for the purpose of road/rail/runway of the airplane.
- Structural Consultant: solving field problems related to geotechnical engineering
- Foundation engineer
- Piping engineer
- Expert for Rehabilitations of the structure: many places the structure is damaged, to restore its strength and serviceability
- Engineering Education: Lecturer/Asst. professor
- Expert in Disaster management: Geospatial applications
- R & D sector: CRRI, RDSO, DRDO, ISRO, and other manufacturing companies related to Geotechnical engineering products
Student Learning Outcomes
After completing the PG Structural Engineering from Marwadi University, the students would be able to:
- Understand the fundamental theories of analyzing given members of plain or continuum structures
- Able to decide appropriate loading on structure and design the same.
- Able to design the structure for dynamic forces like wind, earthquake, or blast loading
- Analyze and design complex structures like high-rise buildings, cable-stayed bridges, silos, bunkers, and membrane structures with the infusion of technology.
- An environment-sensitive person.
The two-year-long program trains the students to become perfect in this discipline. The students will be given the opportunity to engage themselves in the research and consultancy division of the Marwadi University.
