About Program

Course overview

This course combines practical projects with a critical examination of the impact of advertising messages. Working from a solid foundation of the theories and strategies behind successful advertising/branding campaigns, this course aims to develop your ability to devise appropriate brand narratives and to produce powerful, persuasive messages and creative materials.

Students will also develop a range of transferable skills that will be useful in a wide range of future careers. You will consider the powerful effects that advertising has on your own development of self, and understand how it can affect an individual's perceived desires.

Why study this course with us?

The storytelling strategies and techniques developed by advertising help to influence the way we think about products, politics and ‘The Right Priorities’.

In today's digital world, an understanding of how digital media helps to shape our society and our beliefs is essential. At the University of Chester, you will develop knowledge and understanding of visual communication techniques and technologies. Alongside this, you will also develop a critical understanding of the effects that an over-reliance on technology, particularly social and digital media, can bring.

Other advertising courses may define – and therefore teach – the subject either as a form of marketing with some visual design or as a form of graphic design with some marketing. At the University of Chester, we teach the subject from three integrated perspectives: advertising as a strategic corporate activity; digital design and production techniques; and advertising as a social narrative.

This approach helps to develop a critical understanding of how modern advertising shapes our ideas and values. It also prepares you for the future, in a world where technology changes and develops at an exponential rate.
