Examine science and law under the microscope

Choose from a range of science electives (physical, biological or chemical… take your pick), and combine them ever so appealingly with law subjects, including those in the contract, property, equity or administrative arenas with UC’s Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws double degree.

You’ll gain a broad theoretical and technical knowledge of both disciplines, extend your research capabilities and develop a commercial focus that will up your kudos in a host of professions, including as a lab assistant or technician, researcher, science communicator and technical writer or as a solicitor, barrister or advocate.

Our experienced staff will encourage you to develop your legal skills while understanding their connections to the theory and history of law. Supporting your development will be UC’s small class sizes and state-of-the-art facilities, along with ties with the National Centre for Corporate Law and National Institute of Governance. You’ll also benefit from the relationships the University has forged with law firms, the public sector (a huge employer in Canberra) and non-government organisations (also known as NGOs).

UC’s law program is recognised by the Supreme Courts of the ACT and NSW, and our articulation pathways and partnerships with law firms and overseas universities can help you qualify for a law internship or seek admission to the UK or the US (hello, OS career!). What’s more, you will be able to fast-track your studies during our winter term and in your final year, begin the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

Combine a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Laws at UC and you will:

• take part in collaborative work where you’ll team up with research-active academics to develop a research project and report on its outcomes at our Centre for Research in Therapeutic Solutions, Institute of Applied Ecology, National Centre for Forensic Studies, or another approved professional institution.
• become an independent thinker and improve your complex reasoning skills to develop logical and substantiated scientific arguments
• develop a commercial focus that will equip you for careers in science, law and other professions
• have opportunities to travel while you study, to places such as the US, the UK, Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand
• gain a broad theoretical and technical knowledge of the discipline of law, suitable for entering the legal profession or undertaking related careers
• fine-tune your ability to present ideas and opinions effectively and communicate within and across professional and cultural boundaries
• specialise, through electives, in selected areas of law with an emphasis on commercial law
• be able to apply your knowledge and skills to analyse and solve legal problems, undertake complex legal research tasks and reflect upon ethical issues and make suggestions for law reform.
