We have already started to see the application of FinTech e.g. cryptocurrency, crowdfunding, mobile payment systems. Therefore, studying this pathway will help you to have a good grasp of not only the foundations and applications of FinTech but also on the strategic implementation of FinTech.

It is important to note that the curriculum does not include the technology, coding or programming involved in FinTech but the strategic management of technology.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

From day one, you’ll develop the theoretical and practical skills needed to succeed as an investment banker, financial analyst, accountant or finance professional. You will develop soft skills in FinTech that will prepare you career in financial services. An interest in news and current affairs will be an asset as you’ll examine and debate current financial issues in light of what you learn.

Throughout the course you’ll learn about foundations and applications of FinTech, business analytics, financial and management accounting and the business and regulatory environment in which businesses operate. You’ll also learn about financial management and the role of the financial markets and key financial institutions.

A major part of the course involves understanding FinTech and its applications in industry, developing relevant practical skills to prepare you for employment. For example, you’ll learn how to:

  • Manipulate, analyse and interpret financial and non-financial data.
  • Prepare financial reports.
  • Apply accounting principles and techniques to a range of business problems.
  • Use industry-standard software.

You’ll also learn how to appraise evidence, present and communicate clearly, work in a team and conduct independent research when required, such as when preparing a final-year project on a topic of your choice.

HOW YOU'LL LEARN

Accounting and finance with FinTech are practical, career-focused subjects. As far as possible, learning methods will reflect the tasks you’ll be expected to carry out when you start work.

With an emphasis on learning practical skills, underpinned by a sound knowledge of key principles, theories and regulations, you’ll learn in ways that include:

  • Field trips to companies and financial institutions to see how professional accountants and finance professionals operate.
  • Teamwork, to share ideas and insights and produce work together.
  • Guest speakers representing a cross-section of finance, accounting and business expertise.
  • Practical tasks. For example, you can learn how to trade in stocks and shares with our Bloomberg trading platform. This will develop investment management skills that will look impressive on your CV.
  • Lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops.

You’ll also be expected to undertake a great deal of independent study outside of formal teaching time, supported by our specialist business library and a selection of digital materials, financial databases, handbooks, notes and other resources.

If you take a placement year in industry, you’ll ‘learn by doing’ and enhance your practical skills. But even if you don’t choose this option, we’ll support you to find work experience or an internship during the course, which can earn you credits towards your final degree.
