Then our Computing for Business programme is the degree for you!
Our Computing for Business degree is an exciting programme that combines core computing skills along with a strong business focus. The main ethos of our course is to give you the skills and practical experience employers are looking for, while our strong emphasis on entrepreneurship equips you with enough organisational skills to allow you to maximise your business potential.
Our Industrial Liaison Board maintains close links with industry and employers, ensuring our course reflects the latest developments in business practice and technological development.
You’ll have the opportunity to work on projects in the local community and further afield, applying your developing knowledge and providing practical solutions for real-life problems.
Whether you choose to continue with your studies or go straight into work, the course will equip you with the skills and expertise employers and organisations want in today's changing world.
At the University of East London we have BCS accreditation, Microsoft IT Academy and CompTIA Academy status, so your qualification will be recognised and valued anywhere in the IT sector.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
The Computing for Business course is either three years full-time, four years with an optional one-year work placement or five years part-time. We’re fully accredited by the British Computer Society, the chartered institute for IT, so our course will set you on the path to become a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).
In your first year, you’ll cover core components of computing in business such as information systems modelling and design, programming, web technologies and network systems. Our practical approach to learning will ensure you get plenty of hands-on experience.
You’ll also complete a year-long project of your choice in your final year, with the chance to work with others nationally and internationally.
There’s also the option to undertake a year-long industrial placement after your second year, usually paid. We have long-standing links with many well-known employers who can offer you a worthwhile placement. Like many of our students, you could go on to gain permanent employment with your placement organisation.
HOW YOU'LL LEARN
Our teaching emphasises practical skills, giving you as much chance as possible to take learning out of the classroom and apply your new skills in real-life situations. Schemes like our popular Going Global initiative will give you the chance to travel abroad to apply your knowledge.
Each module has been carefully selected and developed to ensure that it aligns with current market trends such as Information Systems Modelling and Design, Business Intelligence, Information Security, Computer Networks, Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Application development and Databases. Please refer to the programme specification for more details.
You’ll have access to first-class teaching and learning facilities and a wide range of computing resources. We use specialised labs to study operating system environments such as Windows Server and Linux, as well as networking and web technologies. You’ll be given software tools for programming, database development, internet access and web-based development.
If you’d like to go on an industry placement, we can help. Our Industrial Liaison Board maintains business connections and our Careers and Student Employability service is there to help you find the right opportunity. Many students go on to work with their placement organisations after they graduate.
In your final year, you’ll work on a year-long individual project of your choice. It’s a chance to follow your own interests, though our research team are there to offer ideas, inspiration or advice.
Much of your learning will take place in groups with your fellow students, helping you to develop a range of important skills such as team working and the ability to negotiate. The size of classes can vary depending on the nature of the course, module and activity. This can range from large groups in a lecture theatre setting, to smaller groups taking part in seminars and collaborative work. You will receive your personalised timetable at the beginning of the academic year dependent on your course. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm.
Throughout the course, you’ll be supported by a personal tutor. There are also specialist support services for students with dyslexia or English as a second language, as well as advice services for accommodation, finance, careers, IT training and learning resources.
YOUR FUTURE CAREER
IT skills really matter in today’s business world, from small start-ups to huge multinational companies. There’s a shortage of people with up-to-date skills and understanding, and organisations need these to fully realise their potential.
Our Computing for Business graduates combine business knowledge with technical ability. You’ll be qualified for many different IT jobs including systems/business/information analysis, systems development and integration and web applications development. You could also progress quickly into management roles in the IT and information systems fields.
For graduates who want to continue their studies at postgraduate level, the Computing for Business undergraduate course provides a suitable entry route to a variety of master’s courses, both at UEL and elsewhere.
Some of our graduates work with local businesses to develop their projects from the initial idea to a complete solution as full stack developers. We have graduates working with web technologies, making and developing apps, working on information analysis, big data and supporting IT infrastructures.
The combination of theory and practical projects that you’ll experience during your course will give you a head start when looking for a job. You’ll have hands-on experience of using open source software such as PHP, Hadoop, MySQL and corporate software such as Oracle and SAS.
How you'll be assessed
We’ll assess you through a combination of coursework and exams. Coursework might include presentations, software demonstrations, research-based assignments and practical exercises involving system or program specification, coding and testing. You’ll always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. Feedback is provided within 15 working days in line with UEL’s assessment and feedback policy.
WITH THE PLACEMENT YEAR
This course offers the opportunity of year-long placement between years two and three. If you choose to take this option, you’ll spend your third year on a placement with a relevant company or organisation, adding valuable practical experience to your growing academic knowledge.
The extra placement year means it will take four years to complete your studies, instead of three.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
