YEAR 1 (LEVEL 6)

 The programme will develop learners knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required by those working with children, young people or vulnerable adults in schools, other areas of children’s services, settings and post 16 providers; provide learners with the skills to communicate and engage effectively with children, young people and vulnerable adults; promote understanding of the needs of the individual, the setting, children, young people and vulnerable adults to support their development as well as promoting their welfare; provide opportunities to engage with and reflect upon their own personal and professional learning through further study and to enhance their professional practice; apply the principles of evidence informed and ethical practice; provide opportunities to explore theoretical concepts and work-based practice in a research context.

The programme emphasises the relationship between theory, research and practice. You will also learn about current issues in education and extend their critical skills of argument, analysis and reflection as appropriate at level 6 study. You will undertake six modules; five core modules and one optional module. The core modules are:

MODULES 

• Journal Review and Evaluation - The module encourages wider reading of empirical educational research, particularly in recent journals with the aim of broadening knowledge of research paradigms in relation to empirical educational research. You will relate education research paradigms to theory
• Philosophy of Education - This module is designed to enable students to develop a systematic understanding of the links between the study of philosophy, education and academic practice. Students will gain an understanding of philosophical approaches that have been proposed and influenced education. Through the study of this module, students will be able to demonstrate acuity and sensitivity in the interpretation of texts and wide reading beyond the course bibliography.   Some will apply this ability to demonstrate unusual analytical ability and rigour and a marked independence of thought.
• Literature Review and Analysis - The module aims to provide an opportunity for students to undertake a literature review and to present their review in the form of a written report and presentation.
• Research Project - The module presents an opportunity for students to undertake a small-scale research project and to present their research findings in the form of a professional poster and abstract.
• Negotiated Learning - Students investigate an area of education that supports the development of their own practice. The module encourages a scholarly approach and enables the sharing of the findings and outcomes of that study with their peers.
