Chemical Engineering | MEng (Hons)

About Program

Overview

Unlock even more career opportunities with the MEng Chemical Engineering, an extended, broader-based qualification with four years of academic study.

Course outline and modules

You could improve the quality of many lives through the products and materials you design and develop as a chemical engineer.

You will learn how to ensure the safe and profitable production of the chemicals and materials required to create products such as clothing, food, medicine, transport and home entertainment systems.

Chemical engineering is a challenging and fascinating profession with extensive career opportunities. With a masters in chemical engineering you will combine a detailed knowledge of chemistry with an understanding of engineering principles in order to design, construct and operate chemical process plants.

What you’ll learn

Our course is designed to develop your engineering skills, in the context of a firm grounding in chemistry. To ensure this, you’ll share your first year with chemists, giving you a good grounding in the subject before gaining a deeper insight into the industrial processes. Subjects you’ll cover include process design, health and safety, biological chemistry, biomaterials, inorganic materials and polymer synthesis.

The MEng builds on the BEng course and is enhanced by additional subjects including process synthesis, advanced management, bioenergy, and a major research project.

Our MEng is a challenging and demanding course which will enable you to progress more readily after graduation to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status which, in turn, equips you to aim for the highest levels in industry.

You have the option to spend a year on placement in industry after your second academic year. Many students find this experience extremely beneficial in terms of their personal development as well as their academic performance and development as an engineer.

For a full list of modules please see ‘Learning, Teaching and Assessment’.

We also have a Learning Development Centre that can provide additional support and offer pre-sessional English language programmes.

Learning, teaching and assessment

Our teaching is varied, including conventional lectures and tutorials, plant visits, lab work and specialist supervision from consultants working in industry.

You will be involved in individual and group project work throughout the course, designed to develop individual skills as an engineer as well as communication and the organisational and leadership skills needed to work effectively in a business or organisation. The course emphasises the commercial as well as industrial aspects of chemical engineering and you will take a number of management-related modules.

Your practical work will include exciting projects. Study here and you’ll be at the heart of a creative and career-focused culture, learning invaluable skills so you’re ready to start your life-changing career.

Assessment is by a combination of exams, project, lab and coursework. Your final degree classification is determined by your performance in all years after the first year.

Career prospects

In addition to the traditional oil and chemical-based industries, you will be well equipped to go into a wide range of careers including food production, pollution control, environmental protection, energy and resource conservation, waste recovery and recycling, medical science, health and safety, research, management and consultancy.

Our graduates have a strong record of finding suitable positions, reflecting the fact that the UK is a major contributor to the global chemical industry. Some of the companies our graduates have gone on to join include: Procter and Gamble, Stone and Webster, BP, ExxonMobil, Kodak, PriceWaterhouseCooper, Unilever, AMEC, British Energy, Kappa, Mowlem, BT, Corus and Pfizer.
