Business with Economics + the Placement year | BSc (Hons)

About Program

Introduction

Master the science of economics while gaining added business know-how, on our combined BSc (Hons) Business with Economics degree in Cambridge.

You’ve set your sights high. You want a course that connects you with up-to-the minute ideas and discussions. We’ve designed our full-time Business with Economics degree to match that ambition.

Here at ARU, you won’t just learn in the classroom. There’s the chance to take economics out of the classroom, debating big ideas such as the minimum wage, capitalism and Brexit in our popular Economics in the Pub sessions.

With an eye on the future, you can also choose to take an optional placement year and add valuable work experience to your CV.

You know there’s more to economics than meets the eye. It’s not just about the numbers, but making sense of those numbers and understanding how society can make the most of its resources.

With economics, there’s never just one way of looking at things. It’s important to be alive to current debates and ways of thinking. You’ll get that as a student in Cambridge.

By studying Business with Economics at ARU, you’ll be looking at the ‘bigger picture’. Together, we’ll explore accounting and mathematics, statistics and econometrics, micro- and macroeconomics. But we’ll also study business more broadly, covering topics such as project management, sustainability, the EU economy and international trade.

As the course progresses, you’ll establish areas of interest that you can develop in your final project. You’ll understand how economics and business, put together, influence organisations’ behaviour and performance – and ultimately impact on all our lives.

These are big ideas. Studying Business with Economics at ARU gives you the space and support you need to grasp them on your own terms.

Careers

Our BSc (Hons) Business with Economics gives you the theoretical and practical knowledge you’ll need to work as an economist, whether that’s in the public or private sector. It’s also a good basis for a range of related careers in business and industry. You could find yourself working for think-tanks or charities, consultancies, national or local government, banks, or accountancy firms. Or you may choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as marketing.

Whichever career path you have your sights set on, you can be confident about graduating with the knowledge, skills and abilities that industry needs. Employers help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.

Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us. You might decide to stay at ARU and study for a Masters, such as our MBA or MSc International Business. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and get 20% off your fees.

4 years with placement

Your final year gives you the opportunity to engage in a substantial piece of research and/or product development work, with the Undergraduate Major Project. You can use this project to explore a business or economics topic that’s of particular interest to you.

Alongside your Major Project, we’ll explore sustainability in business, applied economics, and financial economics. Applied economics lets us take current socioeconomic issues and ‘think outside the box’ about how they can be addressed. Financial economics focuses on the financial markets and assets such as stocks, bonds and money. It will support you if you choose to study for professional programmes such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CBI) in the future.

All assessment is designed to allow you to demonstrate what you’ve learned, and to make sure you’re developing the knowledge and skills you need to complete the course. You can expect an interesting mix of coursework, essays, exams and activity-based assignments. Your coursework could include problem-solving activities, consultancy projects, presentations as well as group or individual reports. You'll also be able to access support materials supported by materials accessed through our learning management system, Canvas.
