BSc (Hons) Building Surveying student
4 years with placement
In your final year, you’ll consolidate and expand your knowledge of building surveying procedures and legislation. You’ll develop an understanding of the costs and complications involved in extending, adapting, altering and conserving existing buildings for re-use with a view to optimising their long-term sustainable economic viability and remaining sensitive to their history. You’ll also learn how commercial and residential property managers effectively manage lettings, maintenance, repair and landlords’ obligations with the aid of ICT, about the contractual obligations of landlords and tenants. You also have the option to find out how large facilities management organisations operate or expand your knowledge of valuation.
You’ll inspect and prepare a schedule of dilapidations and a building survey of real-life commercial buildings. In both cases, you’ll identify the causes of defects and action required to rectify them, and prepare a detailed report for potential clients and their legal advisors. Your schedule of dilapidations will also contain advice on health and safety, while your building survey may make reference to party wall disputes, nearby excavation work, and dispute resolution.
You’ll examine a building development project from inception to completion in order to comprehend and appreciate the totality and implications of the development process, incorporating planning, cost, design technology, and legal, health and safety, and environmental issues. You’ll complete an independent expert or research study, where you’ll investigate a subject, issue or problem to produce a usable outcome with support from a member of our academic staff.
We’ll assess you using a range of methods, including exams, project designs, presentations, role-play, essays, report writing and group work.

My name is Kavisha Prince Anthony, and I always had a dream of studying abroad. Thankfully, that dream came to life since I applied to the Study Advisor. I was able to receive my visa within four days. I also had some visa refusals in the past; I had about six UK visa refusals in the past, but thankfully, it was not an issue since the Study Advisor was able to make things work this time. I highly recommend Study Advisor for your dreams of going abroad, whether it be the UK or any other European country there is.
